Small Business Start-Up Accountants

Small Business Start-Up Accountants

Starting a business is complicated enough. Your accounts should not be.

Most new business owners spend their first year guessing at what HMRC expects, what structure makes sense, and whether they are paying the right amount of tax. Supreme Consulting sets up your finances properly from day one. Fixed monthly fees, cloud accounting included, and questions answered within one working day.

  • Company structure advice before you commit to anything
  • Your bookkeeping current from month one, not month twelve
  • Tax obligations visible well before any deadlines arrive
  • Plain-English guidance on VAT, payroll, and director’s pay

No long-term contract. If the arrangement is not working after three months, you leave with clean books and nothing outstanding.

Takes Time to Explain Things

Sound familiar?

Starting out and not sure what you’re supposed to do?

Most new business owners set up a limited company or go sole trader based on a quick Google search, then spend the next year unsure whether they chose correctly. VAT thresholds, director’s salary, corporation tax, Making Tax Digital — each one a separate question that seems straightforward until it is not. The books drift. By year-end, the catch-up is expensive and the tax bill is a surprise.

  • Unsure whether to trade as a sole trader or limited company
  • No bookkeeping system in place, receipts accumulating somewhere
  • Tax and VAT deadlines approaching with no clear idea of what is owed

What a proper start looks like

The right structure, set up correctly from the beginning, saves money and avoids problems that are genuinely difficult to unwind later. Cloud bookkeeping keeps your records current. And your tax position is visible throughout the year, not revealed once a year by a filing deadline.

  • Structure advice given before you commit, based on your specific situation
  • Bookkeeping set up on Xero or QuickBooks from the start, kept current monthly
  • Tax liability tracked throughout the year so nothing arrives as a surprise
  • Fixed monthly fee covering everything agreed — no unexpected invoices

What you get

Everything a new business needs, properly set up

From company formation through to ongoing compliance and advisory support, each service is priced clearly and delivered without the jargon that makes accounting feel harder than it is.

01

Company Formation and Setup

Your limited company is registered with Companies House, your registered office is in place, and your cloud accounting file is configured before you start trading. Director’s salary, dividend policy, and VAT registration are covered in the same conversation. You start trading with a structure that is actually right for your situation.

Included as standard
02

Bookkeeping, VAT, and Payroll

Monthly bookkeeping keeps your records current and your VAT liability visible at all times. Quarterly VAT returns are filed on time under Making Tax Digital, and payroll runs are processed with RTI submissions handled each pay period. Your VAT threshold is monitored — you will not cross it without knowing about it in advance.

Ongoing monthly service
03

Year-End Accounts and Tax Planning

Annual accounts and your corporation tax return are filed accurately and on schedule. More usefully, your tax position is reviewed throughout the year so that the bill at year-end is one you have already planned for. R&D relief, allowable expenses, and director remuneration strategies are considered as a matter of course.

Why Supreme Consulting

What makes the difference for a new business

Any accountant can file your returns. Fewer will tell you what structure to use before you set up, or flag a VAT issue before it becomes a penalty.

📅

Over 20 years of start-up experience

Founded in 2005, Supreme Consulting has worked with hundreds of new businesses across Hampshire and the UK. Stuart Green works directly with every client, which means the advice you receive comes from someone who has seen the same questions and mistakes many times over. There is no handoff to a junior once the engagement begins.

☁️

Cloud accounting from day one

Xero and QuickBooks Online are set up as part of onboarding, not added later as an afterthought. Your books are accessible in real time, bank feeds are connected, and VAT submissions go straight to HMRC digitally. You know where you stand without waiting for a year-end statement.

💷

Fixed fees, no ambiguity

Your monthly fee is agreed upfront and covers everything in the scope. If your needs change, pricing is adjusted with a conversation, not a surprise invoice. For a new business managing cash flow carefully, knowing exactly what accounting costs each month is a reasonable thing to expect.

Getting started

Up and running in four steps

Most clients are fully onboarded within two weeks. The process requires very little from you beyond a single conversation and access to your existing records.

1

A no-obligation discovery call

A conversation to understand your business, your current setup, and what you actually need from an accountant. No forms to fill in beforehand. You will come away knowing exactly what the next step looks like and what it costs.

2

A clear, fixed-fee proposal

You receive a written proposal covering exactly what is included, the monthly fee, and when things happen. No vague scope, no hourly rates, no clauses that let the fee expand quietly. If something is not included, it is listed separately and priced clearly.

3

Onboarding and cloud setup

Your accounting software is configured, bank feeds connected, and any existing records are migrated or caught up. If you are switching from another accountant, the handover is managed without you needing to chase anyone. Within a fortnight, your books are current and the compliance calendar is in place.

4

Your business, properly supported

Regular check-ins, proactive reminders before deadlines, and answers to questions within one working day. Your tax position is visible throughout the year, your filings are handled, and you spend considerably less time thinking about accounting than you did before.

Questions

Things new business owners usually ask

Should I set up as a sole trader or a limited company?+

It depends on your expected profit, your personal tax position, and whether you need to present a company structure to clients or lenders. There is no single right answer, and the wrong choice can be costly to unwind. This is one of the first things covered in a discovery call, and the advice is based on your specific numbers rather than a generic rule of thumb.

What does start-up accountancy cost and what is included?+

Pricing is fixed and agreed upfront based on the scope of services you need. A typical limited company package covers year-end accounts, corporation tax return, confirmation statement, and ongoing support throughout the year. Bookkeeping, VAT, and payroll are priced separately and added to a monthly retainer. You will receive a written quote before anything is agreed.

My books are already a bit behind — is that a problem?+

No. Many new clients arrive with bookkeeping that has drifted, a drawer of receipts, or accounts that have not been touched since the business started. Catch-up work is included in the onboarding scope where needed and priced clearly. The goal is to get everything current and then maintain it that way going forward.

Is there a minimum contract or a lock-in period?+

There is no long-term contract. Services run on a monthly basis and you can give notice at any time. If you leave, your records are handed over cleanly and promptly. The aim is to be worth keeping — not to make leaving difficult.

When do I need to register for VAT, and will you monitor that?+

The current VAT registration threshold is £90,000 in taxable turnover over any rolling 12-month period. Your turnover is monitored as part of the ongoing bookkeeping service, so you will not approach the threshold without knowing about it. VAT registration, scheme selection, and the first return are handled as part of the service when the time comes.

How much should I set aside for tax in my first year?+

This varies depending on whether you are a sole trader or director, your profit level, and whether you take salary or dividends. As a general starting point, setting aside 25–30% of net profit covers most new limited company owners, but the right figure for your situation is reviewed as part of ongoing management. You will not reach your first payment on account date without a clear picture of what you owe.
