Sound familiar?
Still piecing it together yourself at year end?
A lot of sole traders in Ashley run their business well but handle the accounts as an afterthought. Records accumulate in a drawer, mileage goes unlogged, and the Self Assessment return gets filed in a rush with expenses either missed or overclaimed. It is not incompetence. It is what happens when there is no system and no one to ask.
- ✕ Self Assessment filed in January, with no idea what was owed until then
- ✕ Expenses guessed at because no one has explained what actually qualifies
- ✕ Bookkeeping left to pile up, then reconciled in a weekend scramble
What sorted looks like
Your tax position is visible throughout the year, not just in January. Allowable expenses are identified and recorded correctly. The bookkeeping runs in the background and does not require your weekend.
- ✓ Tax bill calculated well ahead of the deadline, with time to plan
- ✓ Expenses reviewed properly, so you keep what you are entitled to
- ✓ Monthly bookkeeping handled on a fixed fee, records always current
- ✓ Transparent pricing from the start, no unexpected bills

Why sole traders in Ashley work with us
There is no shortage of accountants. There is a shortage of accountants who respond quickly, explain things plainly, and actually know what it is like to run a small business.
Over Twenty Years of Practice
Stuart Green founded Supreme Consulting in 2005 and has worked directly with sole traders, contractors, and small business owners ever since. That means common sole trader situations — disputes over allowable expenses, questions about the cash basis, approaching the VAT threshold — are handled from experience, not looked up. The advice is grounded in what actually happens, not what the textbook says.
Cloud Accounting Included
Xero and QuickBooks Online are set up and managed for you, so your records are current without requiring a spreadsheet or a filing system. You can see your income and outgoings at any point in the year, which makes the Self Assessment return considerably less of a scramble. No extra software cost to budget for.
Fixed Fee, No Surprises
Pricing is agreed upfront and set out clearly in a written proposal before any work starts. There are no hourly rates that grow unexpectedly, no charges for a quick question by email, and no end-of-year invoices that bear no relation to what you expected to pay. What is in the proposal is what you pay.
Up and running in four steps
The onboarding process is straightforward. Most clients are set up within a week of the proposal being signed, with no disruption to how they run their business day to day.
A Brief Discovery Call
A no-obligation conversation, typically 20 to 30 minutes. Stuart will ask about your business, your current setup, and what you actually need from an accountant. You will leave the call with a clear sense of whether there is a fit, and what the next step looks like.
A Clear Written Proposal
You receive a fixed-fee proposal covering exactly what is included, the timeline, and the annual cost. There is nothing to decode. If you want to add a service or remove one, that gets adjusted before you sign anything.
Onboarding and Setup
Cloud accounting is set up, records are migrated or cleaned up as needed, and any historic filings are reviewed. If there is a previous accountant to notify, that is handled for you. The transition is managed without it landing back on your to-do list.
Ongoing, Without the Stress
From that point, your books are maintained, your tax position is visible throughout the year, and questions get answered when you ask them. The Self Assessment return gets filed on time, the liability is not a shock, and the accounts part of running your business largely takes care of itself.
“Stuart is a thorough efficient worker who produces good quality results at a reasonable price.”
Things sole traders usually ask
I work for myself in a fairly straightforward trade. Do I actually need an accountant?
Plenty of sole traders manage their own Self Assessment returns, and for the very simplest cases that can work. Where things go wrong is with allowable expenses, the cash basis election, overlap relief, and the growing complexity that comes once turnover grows or circumstances change. An accountant who works with sole traders regularly will typically identify savings that more than cover the fee, and will catch errors before they attract HMRC attention.
What does a sole trader package cost, and what does it include?
Pricing is fixed and agreed before any work begins. A core sole trader package covers the Self Assessment return, a review of allowable expenses, and year-round access to Stuart for questions. Bookkeeping, VAT, and payroll can be added to a monthly retainer at separately agreed rates. The proposal sets out every line item so there is nothing ambiguous about what you are paying for.
My books are behind and I am not sure how much of a state they are in. Can you still help?
Yes, and it is a common starting point. A catch-up service is available to bring records up to date before moving to a regular ongoing arrangement. The cost of the catch-up is quoted separately and transparently once the scope is understood. Most clients find the process far less painful than they anticipated.
Is there a minimum contract or a tie-in period?
There is no long-term contract. Engagements run on a rolling basis and you can leave with reasonable notice. If you decide to move on, your records are kept up to date, any filings due are completed, and everything is handed over cleanly. There are no exit fees and no awkward conversations.
I am approaching the VAT registration threshold. What do I need to know?
The threshold is monitored as part of ongoing bookkeeping, so you will not cross it without knowing in advance. If registration becomes likely, there is time to consider the flat rate scheme, annual accounting, and the impact on pricing before any obligation arises. The registration itself is straightforward once the timing is confirmed.
How far in advance will I know what my tax bill is?
With current bookkeeping in place, a reliable estimate is typically available three to four months before the January payment deadline. That gives you time to set aside the right amount, or in some cases to take steps that legitimately reduce the liability before the tax year closes. Filing well ahead of the deadline rather than in the final days is standard practice here.
Less guesswork at year end, more clarity all year.
