Sound familiar?

VAT should not be this hard to get right.

For a lot of Lyndhurst businesses, VAT sits in a permanent state of mild uncertainty. The threshold crept up without anyone flagging it. The scheme chosen at registration no longer suits the business. Quarterly deadlines arrive faster than the paperwork. And Making Tax Digital adds another layer of compliance that nobody fully explained when it was introduced.

  • Unsure whether you are on the most appropriate VAT scheme for your turnover
  • Quarterly filing deadlines causing a last-minute scramble every three months
  • MTD requirements not fully in place, with HMRC correspondence piling up

What sorted looks like

The right VAT setup, properly maintained, stops most of these problems before they start. That means the correct scheme from the outset, returns filed well ahead of the deadline, and full MTD compliance handled through your cloud accounting software.

  • VAT scheme reviewed against your actual figures so you are not overpaying
  • Returns prepared and submitted with time to spare, not the night before
  • MTD submissions handled through Xero or QuickBooks — nothing left to chance
  • Fixed-fee pricing confirmed upfront, with no bill arriving that you did not expect

What you get

VAT compliance, covered end to end

From registration and scheme selection through to quarterly returns and MTD submissions, every part of your VAT obligation is handled and accounted for.

01

VAT Returns and MTD Filing

Your quarterly VAT return is prepared from your records, reviewed, and submitted to HMRC before the deadline. MTD-compliant submissions go straight through your Xero or QuickBooks account, so there is a full digital audit trail and nothing gets missed.

Included as standard
02

Registration and Scheme Advisory

Whether you are approaching the threshold for the first time or reconsidering your current scheme, the advice is grounded in your actual numbers. Flat rate, cash accounting, annual accounting — the choice depends on your business, not a one-size answer.

Upfront advice
03

Catch-Up and HMRC Correspondence

If returns are outstanding or HMRC correspondence has been left unresolved, that gets dealt with as part of the onboarding process. Penalties and surcharges can often be reduced where there are genuine grounds — it is worth establishing the position before assuming the worst.

Why Supreme Consulting

Why businesses in Lyndhurst choose us

There are plenty of accountants. The difference tends to come down to how well they understand your business and how quickly they respond when something needs sorting.

📅

21 years working with small businesses

Supreme Consulting was founded in 2005 and has worked with small businesses, sole traders, and contractors across Hampshire ever since. That means VAT questions — threshold timing, scheme changes, HMRC disputes — have come up hundreds of times before yours does. The answers tend to arrive faster as a result.

💷

Fixed fees, confirmed before you start

Every engagement is priced on a fixed-fee basis, agreed before any work begins. There are no hourly rates running in the background and no invoice arriving that you did not anticipate. If the scope changes, that conversation happens before the work does.

☁️

MTD-ready cloud accounting included

All VAT compliance runs through Xero or QuickBooks Online, both of which are fully MTD-compliant. If you are not yet set up on either platform, migration is part of the onboarding process. Real-time figures mean your VAT position is visible throughout the quarter, not just when the deadline arrives.

Getting started

Up and running in four steps

Switching accountants or getting VAT set up properly for the first time takes less effort than most business owners expect. Here is how the process works.

1

A no-obligation discovery call

A short call to understand your business, your current VAT position, and what needs to change. No forms to fill in beforehand and nothing to prepare — just a straightforward conversation. You will leave knowing exactly what the next step is.

2

A clear, fixed-fee proposal

Following the call, you receive a written proposal covering everything included, the fixed fee, and what happens at each stage. No hidden extras and no ambiguity about what is and is not in scope.

3

Onboarding and cloud setup

Records are migrated to Xero or QuickBooks Online, MTD connections are established, and your first VAT return is prepared from clean data. If there is catch-up work to do, it is scoped and priced separately before it starts.

4

VAT handled, every quarter

Returns are filed on time, your cloud records stay current, and you are not thinking about the next HMRC deadline. The VAT side of the business runs as it should, without requiring your attention every three months.

Questions

Things people usually ask us first

Do you handle VAT for the kinds of businesses operating in and around Lyndhurst — hospitality, tourism, retail, trades?+

Yes. The New Forest area has a high concentration of hospitality businesses, accommodation providers, retailers, and trades, all of which have their own VAT considerations — partial exemption, different VAT rates on different sales, the Tour Operators’ Margin Scheme in some cases. These are not unusual situations and do not require lengthy explanations before getting a useful answer.

What does VAT compliance typically cost and what is included?+

Pricing is fixed and agreed upfront based on the scope of work — number of VAT returns per year, whether registration or scheme migration is needed, and whether catch-up returns are required. A quarterly VAT return service for a straightforward business starts at a level accessible to most sole traders and small limited companies. The exact figure is in your written proposal before any work begins.

My VAT records are not in great shape. Can you still help?+

Most new clients arrive with records that are at least partially out of order. Catch-up bookkeeping and VAT reconciliation are a standard part of what Supreme Consulting does at onboarding. The extent of the catch-up work is assessed on the discovery call and priced separately and clearly before it starts. It is rarely as bad as people expect once someone who knows what they are doing looks at it properly.

Is there a minimum contract term or lock-in period?+

There is no long-term contract. Engagements run on a monthly basis and you can give notice at any time. If you leave, your records are transferred in an orderly way and nothing is owed beyond the work already completed. The aim is to make staying the obvious choice, not the only one.

We are approaching the VAT threshold. How much notice do we need to give before registering?+

HMRC requires registration within 30 days of the end of the month in which you exceeded the threshold — which leaves very little margin if it catches you by surprise. As part of ongoing bookkeeping, your rolling 12-month turnover is monitored so that threshold proximity is flagged with enough time to prepare. Voluntary registration before the threshold is sometimes worth considering depending on your customer base and input tax position.

Could we be on the wrong VAT scheme and paying more than we need to?+

Quite possibly, and it is one of the first things worth reviewing. The flat rate scheme benefits some businesses and costs others money. Cash accounting suits businesses with slow-paying customers. Annual accounting reduces admin but changes cash flow timing. The right answer depends on your margins, customer base, and trading pattern — a short review of your last few years of figures is usually enough to establish whether a change would be worthwhile.
