Sound familiar?
Still not entirely sure your VAT submissions are MTD-compliant?
A lot of Hampshire businesses are technically filing under MTD but doing so in ways that do not fully satisfy HMRC’s digital link requirements. Bridging software patched onto a spreadsheet, software that has never been properly configured, records that exist in two places and get manually copied across. The submissions go in, but the underlying process would not survive a compliance check.
- VAT records kept in a spreadsheet with a bridging tool bolted on
- Quarterly deadlines approached with uncertainty about what the figure should be
- No clear view of your VAT position between return periods
What compliant MTD looks like
MTD for VAT works smoothly when the bookkeeping sits inside MTD-compatible software from the start. We configure Xero or QuickBooks Online to your business, ensure your records satisfy HMRC’s digital link rules, and handle every quarterly submission from there.
- Cloud bookkeeping configured correctly so digital links are genuinely maintained
- Your VAT figure calculated and reviewed before the submission deadline, with time to query anything
- Running VAT position visible in your software at any point in the quarter
- Fixed-fee pricing, so you know the cost before agreeing to anything

What makes the difference in practice
There is no shortage of accountants who will file your MTD return. The difference is in how well it is set up, how visible your position is between quarters, and whether anyone flags a problem before it becomes one.
MTD-native from the ground up
We have worked in cloud accounting since before MTD was mandated. Xero and QuickBooks Online are the tools we use every day, not an add-on to a paper-based practice. That means your digital links are real, your records sit where they should, and your submissions come from a single source of truth rather than a patchwork of exports.
VAT position visible between quarters
Most accountants see your VAT once a quarter, when the return is due. Because your records sit in cloud software we both access, your running VAT position is visible at any point. If something looks off mid-quarter, it gets caught before the deadline rather than after it.
Fixed fee, no billing surprises
VAT retainer pricing is agreed upfront, covering quarterly submissions and the support that goes with them. There are no hourly rates quietly accumulating in the background and no invoice that arrives larger than expected. You know what you pay before you start.
Up and running in four steps
Most clients are fully set up and submitting via MTD within a few weeks of getting in touch. The process is straightforward and we handle the heavy lifting.
A quick discovery call
We start with a no-obligation conversation about your current VAT setup, the software you use, and what your quarterly process looks like. You do not need to prepare anything. The call usually takes around 20 minutes.
A clear, fixed-fee proposal
You will receive a written proposal setting out exactly what is covered, the fixed monthly or quarterly fee, and what happens next. No hourly rates, no vague scope, no surprises.
We handle the migration
If you are moving from spreadsheets or older software, we migrate your records to Xero or QuickBooks Online, configure the MTD settings, and ensure your digital links are correctly established. You do not need to know how any of that works — that is the point.
Quarterly compliance, quietly handled
From there, your VAT returns are prepared, reviewed with you, and submitted each quarter. Your position is visible in the software whenever you want to check it. Filing deadlines pass without drama, which is, frankly, how it should be.
“I’m so grateful for the help received with my small cleaning business. Stuart holds your hand and advises throughout!”
Things people usually ask before getting started
My business already files VAT quarterly. Does that mean I am already MTD-compliant?
Not necessarily. Filing quarterly is only part of the requirement. HMRC also requires a maintained digital link between your accounting records and your VAT return — meaning the figures cannot be manually keyed across at any point in the process. Many businesses that use bridging software on top of a spreadsheet are technically non-compliant even though their returns arrive on time. We review the current process before assuming anything is in order.
What does MTD VAT compliance cost with Supreme Consulting?
Pricing depends on whether you need an initial setup and migration or are already on compatible software, and on the volume of transactions involved. Quarterly VAT retainers are fixed-fee and agreed in writing before we start. You will not receive an invoice for more than the agreed amount. We provide a clear quote after the discovery call, typically within one working day.
My books are a bit behind. Can you still help, or do I need to get everything in order first?
Catch-up bookkeeping is something we handle regularly. Businesses usually come to us with records in varying states of completeness, and that is fine. We will let you know the cost of bringing everything current before starting, so there are no surprises. Once the backlog is cleared, ongoing compliance is straightforward.
Is there a minimum contract or a tie-in period?
No minimum contract. We work on a rolling monthly or quarterly basis, and you can give notice at any point. If you do leave, your records remain in your own Xero or QuickBooks account and you take them with you. We do not hold data as leverage.
What happens if HMRC queries one of our MTD VAT submissions?
We handle HMRC correspondence on your behalf as part of the ongoing service. If a query arises, we review the relevant returns, respond to HMRC directly, and keep you informed throughout. VAT investigations are uncommon when records are properly maintained, but if one does occur, you will not be dealing with it alone.
Can you help us decide which VAT scheme is best for our business?
Yes. The right scheme depends on your turnover, cash flow patterns, and the type of business you run. Flat rate, cash accounting, and annual accounting each have situations where they are genuinely useful, and situations where they cost you more than the standard method. We review your position at the outset and revisit it if your circumstances change.
