Sound familiar?

Self Assessment stress you could do without.

Most sole traders file their own tax return until the year something goes wrong: an underpayment notice, a missed payment on account, or an expense disallowed. By then, the cost of sorting it out is usually higher than the cost of getting it right the first time. Tax is not complicated when someone who knows it is keeping an eye on it throughout the year.

  • ✕ Tax bill arrives as a shock because nothing was tracked through the year
  • ✕ Expenses are guessed or under-claimed because the rules are unclear
  • ✕ Self Assessment deadline looms with records scattered across bank accounts and receipts

What a good tax accountant actually does

Your tax position is monitored year-round, not just in January. Expenses are reviewed properly, your return is filed with time to plan for the payment, and any questions from HMRC are handled without you needing to understand the detail.

  • ✓ Tax liability estimated throughout the year — no January surprises
  • ✓ Allowable expenses reviewed and claimed correctly every time
  • ✓ Records pulled together and your return filed well ahead of the deadline
  • ✓ Fixed fees agreed upfront — you know the cost before the work starts

What you get

What a sole trader package covers

Core compliance handled cleanly, with tax planning built in — not bolted on as an afterthought when the return is already late.

01

Self Assessment, Done Properly

Your SA100 return is prepared from your records, with all allowable expenses reviewed and claimed. You receive a clear summary of your tax liability before the return is submitted, so the payment due in January is not a surprise. Registration, amendments, and any follow-up correspondence with HMRC are included.

Included as standard
02

Bookkeeping and Cloud Accounting

Monthly bookkeeping keeps your records current in Xero or QuickBooks Online, so your tax position is always visible rather than a reconstruction exercise at year end. If your records are behind, catch-up bookkeeping gets everything in order before we start. Real-time access means you can see your figures whenever you need them.

Monthly retainer option
03

Tax Planning Throughout the Year

Sole trader tax planning is mostly practical: timing of income and expenditure, pension contributions, use of the trading allowance, and understanding when incorporation starts to make financial sense. Questions are answered when they arise, not when it is already too late to act. Fixed fees mean you can ask without worrying about the clock.

Why Supreme Consulting

Why sole traders work with us

There are plenty of accountants who will file your return. Fewer will tell you in August what your January payment is likely to be.

📅

Over 20 years of practice

Supreme Consulting has been working with sole traders, freelancers, and small businesses since 2005. That is long enough to have seen most situations before and to know which ones need attention early. Experience means fewer questions back to you and faster turnaround on your return.

💷

Fixed fees, agreed in advance

You receive a clear, fixed-fee proposal before any work begins. No hourly rates, no bill that is larger than expected because something took longer than anticipated. Knowing the cost upfront makes it easier to budget and easier to ask questions without hesitation.

💡

Tax planning, not just filing

Filing a return is the minimum. The more useful work happens in the months before: reviewing your expenses properly, flagging when a payment on account is due, and pointing out when a different structure might reduce your tax going forward. That kind of proactive advice is included, not charged separately.

Getting started

Up and running in four steps.

The process is straightforward. Most clients are fully onboarded within a week of the first call, with everything in place before any deadlines are relevant.

1

A brief discovery call

A short, no-obligation conversation to understand your business, your current records, and what you need. You will leave the call knowing what is included and what it costs — no waiting for a proposal that never arrives.

2

Your fixed-fee proposal

You receive a clear written proposal covering exactly what is included, what the fee is, and when work will be completed. Nothing in the small print that changes the cost later.

3

Onboarding and setup

We handle the transition from your previous accountant or DIY approach. Records are migrated or caught up, cloud accounting is set up if needed, and your tax position is reviewed from the start. You do very little.

4

Your books handled, ongoing

From here, your returns are filed on time, your tax liability is visible throughout the year, and questions are answered when you ask them. Considerably less to think about, which is the point.

Questions

Things sole traders usually ask

Do I need an accountant if I am just a sole trader with straightforward income?+

It depends on whether your return is actually straightforward. Many sole traders assume it is, then discover underclaimed expenses, missed payments on account, or a Class 4 National Insurance calculation that was wrong for years. An accountant does not need to be expensive to be worth it — the question is whether the cost is lower than what you are currently leaving unclaimed or paying incorrectly.

What does a sole trader tax accountant cost, and what is included?+

Supreme Consulting uses fixed-fee pricing, so the cost is agreed before any work begins. A sole trader package typically covers your Self Assessment return, a review of allowable expenses, and access to support throughout the year. If you need bookkeeping, VAT, or additional advisory work, those are added to the scope and priced clearly. Indicative pricing is available on request via the free quote form.

My records are a mess — can you still help?+

Yes, and it is a common starting point. Catch-up bookkeeping is a standard part of the onboarding process for clients coming from DIY accounting or a previous accountant who did not maintain current records. The catch-up work is priced separately and clearly so you know what it costs to get to a clean baseline before ongoing work begins.

Is there a long-term contract?+

No. There is no minimum term or lock-in. If the service is not working for you, you can leave with clean records and no outstanding obligations. In practice, clients tend to stay because the work gets done reliably and the fee is predictable — not because leaving is difficult.

Can you help if I am approaching the VAT registration threshold?+

Yes, and it is exactly the kind of thing that should be monitored before it becomes a problem. Once turnover is close to the VAT threshold, there are decisions to make: whether to register voluntarily, which VAT scheme suits the business, and how registration affects pricing. It is considerably easier to plan for this in advance than to register retrospectively and account for VAT on sales already made.

How far in advance will I know what my tax bill is?+

With current bookkeeping in place, your estimated tax liability is visible throughout the year rather than calculated at the point of filing. Most clients receive an estimated figure by October or November, well ahead of the January payment deadline. If a payment on account is due in July, that is flagged in advance too — not discovered when the HMRC statement arrives.

Ready when you are

Less guesswork on your tax bill. More time on the business.
