Freelancer Accountant Uk

Freelancer Accountant UK

Your freelance finances, properly handled.

Most freelancers manage fine until they do not — the Self Assessment deadline arrives, the tax bill is larger than expected, and the books are six months behind. Supreme Consulting has worked with freelancers and sole traders since 2005. Fixed monthly fees, no hidden extras, and questions answered within one working day.

  • Know your tax bill months before January, not days
  • Allowable expenses claimed correctly, nothing left on the table
  • Self Assessment filed accurately and on time, every year
  • IR35 position reviewed if you operate through a limited company

No long-term contract. If it is not working after three months, you leave with clean books and nothing owed.

Sound familiar?

Still not sure what your tax bill will be?

Freelancing gives you control over your work. Your finances are often a different story. Invoices go out, expenses pile up, and the Self Assessment deadline rolls around faster than expected. Most freelancers find themselves scrambling in January with incomplete records and a tax bill that comes as an unwelcome surprise.

  • Tax bill unknown until a few weeks before the January deadline
  • Expenses tracked inconsistently, with allowable costs regularly missed
  • Self Assessment filed late or completed in a rush with no planning beforehand

What sorted looks like

Your books are current, your tax position is visible throughout the year, and your Self Assessment is filed well before the deadline. There is considerably less to think about, and nothing lands on your desk without warning.

  • Tax liability calculated quarterly so January holds no surprises
  • Every allowable expense identified and recorded — nothing left unclaimed
  • Self Assessment prepared, reviewed, and filed well ahead of the deadline
  • Fixed monthly fee covering everything agreed — no unexpected invoices

What you get

Everything a UK freelancer needs, covered

Services are scoped to what you actually need and priced clearly from the outset. Nothing bundled in that you will never use.

01

Self Assessment and Personal Tax

Your SA100 return is prepared accurately, with every allowable expense reviewed before filing. You will know your liability well in advance of the January deadline, not the week before. Payments on account are planned so cash flow is not caught out.

Core service
02

Bookkeeping and Cloud Accounting

Monthly bookkeeping keeps your records current throughout the year, removing the year-end panic entirely. We work in Xero and QuickBooks Online, so your figures are accessible whenever you need them. Catch-up and clean-up services are available if the records need some attention first.

Available monthly
03

IR35 Reviews and Tax Planning

If you contract through a limited company, IR35 status is something worth reviewing properly rather than assuming. We assess your contracts and working arrangements and give you a clear, written view of your position. Tax planning beyond Self Assessment — including payments on account, class 4 National Insurance, and dividend strategy — is included where relevant.

Why Supreme Consulting

Four reasons freelancers stay with us

There is no shortage of accountants. These are the things that make a practical difference to freelancers specifically.

📅

Over 20 years working with freelancers

Supreme Consulting has been advising sole traders, freelancers, and owner-managed businesses since 2005. That means Stuart has seen most situations before — from IR35 concerns and late filing to more complex tax planning for higher-earning contractors. You will not be explaining how freelance income works before getting a useful answer.

💷

A fixed fee, agreed upfront

Every engagement starts with a clear, written proposal covering exactly what is included and what it costs. There are no hourly rates ticking in the background, and nothing is added to the bill without a conversation first. For most freelancers, that means one predictable monthly amount and no surprises.

☁️

Real-time figures, not year-old data

Working in Xero or QuickBooks Online means your financial position is visible at any point in the year, not just when the accounts are filed. That matters if you are planning a rate increase, taking on a new contract, or just want to know what your tax bill is shaping up to be before January.

Getting started

Up and running in four straightforward steps

The process is designed to be low-effort on your side. Most clients are fully set up within two weeks of the initial call.

1

A no-obligation discovery call

We start with a short conversation to understand your situation — how you work, what you earn, and what your current setup looks like. No preparation required on your part. You will leave the call knowing exactly what we would recommend and what it would cost.

2

A clear, fixed-fee proposal

Within one working day you will receive a written proposal covering the full scope of work, pricing, and timelines. Everything is itemised. If the scope needs adjusting, that conversation happens before anything is signed.

3

Onboarding and cloud setup

We handle the transition from your previous accountant or your own records. Cloud accounting is set up, any catch-up bookkeeping is scoped and scheduled, and your HMRC authorisation is transferred. You do very little.

4

Your finances, running as they should

Once onboarded, your books are maintained, your returns are filed on time, and you have a clear view of your tax position throughout the year. Questions get answered the day you ask them. Which is, frankly, the way it should be.

Questions

Things freelancers usually ask us

Do you understand how freelance income actually works — irregular invoicing, expenses across multiple clients, payments on account?+

Yes. Freelance income is structurally different from employment, and it affects everything from how bookkeeping is organised to how Self Assessment is prepared and what cash needs to be set aside. Payments on account in particular catch a lot of freelancers out in year two. We plan for them in advance so there are no unexpected demands from HMRC.

What does it cost and what is actually included?+

Pricing depends on the scope of services you need and the complexity of your affairs. A straightforward sole trader Self Assessment return is priced differently from an ongoing monthly bookkeeping and tax planning package. Every proposal is fixed-fee and itemised, so you know what you are paying before anything starts. There are no hourly rates and nothing is added to the bill without your agreement.

My books are a bit of a mess. Can you still take me on?+

Fairly often, yes. Catch-up and clean-up work is something we do regularly. The first step is understanding how far behind things are, which the discovery call covers. If there is a backlog, we will scope and price the catch-up work separately and clearly before starting. It is a solvable problem in most cases.

Is there a minimum contract term? What happens if I leave?+

There is no long-term lock-in. Monthly retainer clients give one month’s notice, and one-off service clients have no ongoing commitment at all. If you leave, your records are returned to you in an accessible format and your HMRC authorisation is transferred to whoever takes over. You will not be left in a worse position than when you arrived.

I do some work through a limited company and some as a sole trader. Can you handle both?+

Yes. Mixed structures are common among freelancers and contractors, and they do bring additional considerations — particularly around IR35, dividend strategy, and ensuring the right income is reported in the right return. We can handle the director’s Self Assessment, the company accounts and CT600, and any payroll or VAT obligations within a single engagement.

How far in advance will I know what my tax bill is?+

For clients on a bookkeeping retainer, your tax position is visible throughout the year and formally reviewed before each payments on account deadline. For Self Assessment-only clients, we aim to have your return prepared and your liability confirmed at least two months before the January deadline. The goal is that you are never reading a figure for the first time on the HMRC portal.

Ready when you are

Stop guessing what you owe. Get it handled.
