Sound familiar?
Still not sure what your tax bill will be?
Self Assessment catches a lot of people out — not because the rules are especially complicated, but because nobody has sat down with them and worked through what applies to their situation. Expenses get missed. Deadlines creep up. The January rush produces a number that arrives with no context and no time to plan. For most sole traders and directors, that is broadly how it goes every year.
- ✕ Tax bill arriving in January with no time to prepare for it
- ✕ Allowable expenses missed because nobody checked what qualifies
- ✕ Return filed late or inaccurately, with an HMRC penalty to follow
What a properly handled return looks like
Your return prepared by someone who knows what to look for, filed accurately, and explained in plain English. The number is not a surprise because you already know it.
- ✓ Tax liability calculated and confirmed months before the deadline
- ✓ Every relevant expense reviewed and claimed — nothing overlooked
- ✓ Return filed on time, correctly, with written confirmation provided
- ✓ Fixed fee agreed upfront — no hourly billing, no end-of-year invoice surprises

What the Self Assessment service covers
A fixed-fee service covering preparation, review, and filing. All the parts you dislike most are handled — you provide the information, we do the rest.
SA100 Return Preparation and Filing
Your full Self Assessment return prepared from your income records, employment details, dividends, rental income, capital gains, or any other relevant sources. Every figure is cross-checked before submission. You receive confirmation once filed with HMRC.
Included as standardExpenses Review and Tax Planning
Before the return is finalised, allowable expenses are reviewed against what you have actually spent. For sole traders, directors, and landlords, this frequently uncovers deductions that reduce the liability. Where there is planning to be done — pension contributions, timing of income, or payments on account — it is flagged clearly.
Included as standardYear-Round Support and Bookkeeping
The return is easier when the records are current throughout the year. Clients who also use Supreme Consulting for bookkeeping or cloud accounting arrive at year-end with clean, organised figures rather than a folder of receipts. Quarterly bookkeeping retainers are available alongside the Self Assessment service.

Why clients in Lymington use us for Self Assessment
There are plenty of accountants who will file your return. Fewer will tell you what it means, what you could have done differently, and what to think about next year.
Over 20 years of returns filed
Supreme Consulting has been preparing Self Assessment returns since 2005. Sole traders, company directors, landlords, partners, freelancers — the firm has seen most configurations. There is very little that comes up in a personal tax return that has not been encountered before.
Fixed fee, agreed before you start
The price is confirmed upfront once the scope is clear. There are no hourly rates, no per-query charges, and no end-of-year invoice that is larger than expected. If the scope changes materially, that is discussed before any additional work is done.
Plain English, not accounting jargon
When the return is ready, you will receive a straightforward summary of what was included, what the liability is, and when payment is due. If there are payments on account to consider, those are explained clearly. The goal is that you leave the process understanding your own tax position.
Up and running in four steps
The process is designed to require as little from you as possible. Most clients are onboarded and have their return underway within a week of the first call.
A brief discovery call
A short, no-obligation conversation to understand your situation — whether you are a sole trader, director, landlord, or a combination. There is no charge for this call, and you will leave knowing what is involved and what it costs.
Fixed-fee proposal sent
You receive a clear written proposal covering the scope of the return, what information is needed from you, and the fixed fee. No ambiguity, no hidden extras — sign off when you are ready.
You provide the information
A straightforward checklist is sent to guide you through what is needed — bank statements, income figures, expenses, P60 if applicable. You do not need to organise it perfectly; that is what the preparation stage is for.
Return filed, bill confirmed
The return is prepared, reviewed with you, and filed with HMRC. You receive written confirmation and a clear breakdown of what you owe and when it is due. Come January, there are no surprises — which is, frankly, how it should be.

Common questions about Self Assessment
I am a company director as well as a sole trader — do I need one return or two?
You need one Self Assessment return, but it needs to cover both income sources correctly. Director’s salary and dividends from your limited company are reported alongside any sole trader income. The two interact when calculating your overall tax liability, so the return needs to be prepared with both in view. This is a common situation and straightforward to handle when the records are in order.
What does the Self Assessment service cost, and what is included?
Pricing is fixed and agreed upfront before any work begins. The fee depends on the complexity of your return — a straightforward sole trader with one income source costs less than a director with rental income, capital gains, and overseas earnings. You will receive a written quote after the initial call. There are no hourly charges and no surprises when the invoice arrives.
My records are in a mess and I have missed previous years — can you still help?
Yes. Catch-up work is a routine part of the service. If you have outstanding returns or disorganised records, the first step is understanding how far back the issue goes and what information is retrievable. HMRC late filing penalties are fixed amounts and do not compound indefinitely, so the situation is rarely as bad as it feels. The cost of catch-up work is quoted separately and agreed before anything is started.
Is there a minimum contract or a tie-in period?
There is no long-term contract. Self Assessment is typically a one-return-per-year engagement, billed at a fixed fee each time. If you also take on ongoing bookkeeping or advisory services, those are monthly retainers with no penalty for leaving. If you decide to move on, your records are handed over cleanly and promptly.
What are payments on account, and do I need to worry about them?
Payments on account are advance payments towards your next year’s tax bill, collected by HMRC in January and July. They are calculated at 50% of your previous year’s liability and often catch people off guard the first time they appear. When your return is filed, the implications for payments on account are explained clearly so you can budget for them — they are not a penalty, just a timing mechanism.
Can you help me reduce my Self Assessment bill, not just file it?
Within the bounds of what is legitimately claimable, yes. Pension contributions, allowable business expenses, the timing of income between tax years, and the treatment of capital gains are all areas where preparation before the year-end makes a material difference. Filing the return accurately is the baseline; identifying planning opportunities before the tax year closes is where the real value sits.
No more January surprises. Get it sorted.
A fixed-fee Self Assessment return, filed accurately, with your tax liability confirmed well before the deadline. One call is enough to get started.
