Sound familiar?

VAT deadline approaching. Records still not reconciled.

For most small businesses in Hampshire, VAT sits at the back of the queue until it cannot be ignored any longer. The quarter closes, the records are incomplete, and the return gets filed on rough figures. It is a pattern that causes problems gradually, then all at once when HMRC takes an interest.

  • ✕ Quarterly deadline arrives before the bookkeeping is caught up
  • ✕ Uncertainty over which sales are standard-rated, zero-rated, or exempt
  • ✕ No clear visibility on whether you are approaching the VAT registration threshold

What a tidy VAT position looks like

When the records are current and the submissions are planned in advance, quarterly VAT stops being a crisis. You know your liability before the deadline, and your threshold is watched year-round.

  • ✓ Returns prepared from clean, reconciled records every quarter
  • ✓ VAT liability correctly calculated, including partial exemption where it applies
  • ✓ Threshold monitored monthly so registration obligations are never a surprise
  • ✓ Fixed fee agreed upfront — the same amount every month, regardless of volume

What you get

VAT compliance, handled end to end

From registration through to quarterly filing and MTD submissions, the work is managed on your behalf using cloud accounting tools you already have access to.

01

Quarterly VAT Returns Filed

Your VAT return is prepared from reconciled records and submitted to HMRC before the deadline, every quarter. Where the figures need reviewing or adjusting, that is flagged before submission, not after. You receive confirmation once the return is accepted.

Included as standard
02

Making Tax Digital Compliance

All VAT submissions are made through MTD-compatible software — Xero or QuickBooks Online depending on your setup. If you are not yet on a cloud platform, migration is handled as part of onboarding. The digital link requirements are met from day one.

MTD-ready
03

VAT Registration and Scheme Advice

If you are approaching the registration threshold, or considering voluntary registration, the commercial case is assessed before any application is made. Annual accounting, flat rate, and cash accounting schemes are reviewed against your turnover and sector. You end up on the scheme that costs you least.

Advisory included

Why Supreme Consulting

What makes the difference in practice

Any accountant can file a VAT return. The difference is whether they understand your business well enough to catch the issues before submission.

📅

Two decades of VAT experience

Founded in 2005, Supreme Consulting has handled VAT across construction, hospitality, e-commerce, healthcare, and property for over twenty years. The edge cases — partial exemption, reverse charge, flat rate exit points — are not new problems here. They have come up before, and they have been resolved before.

☁️

MTD-ready from day one

All VAT work is processed through Xero or QuickBooks Online, both of which are fully MTD-compatible. If your records are currently in spreadsheets or legacy software, migration is handled at onboarding. Your submissions are digital-link compliant before the first return goes in.

💷

Fixed fee, no surprises

VAT pricing is agreed upfront based on your transaction volume and complexity. The fee does not change if a quarter is busier than usual. You know what you are paying before the first return is filed, and the invoice looks the same every month.

Getting started

Up and running in four steps

Most clients are set up and have their first return in progress within two weeks of the initial call. The process is straightforward on your side.

1

A brief discovery call

A no-obligation conversation covering your business, your current VAT position, and what scheme you are on. It usually takes around twenty minutes. You will know whether we are a sensible fit before any commitment is made.

2

A clear, fixed-fee proposal

You receive a written proposal setting out exactly what is covered, what the fee is, and what happens at each quarter end. No open-ended hourly billing. No ambiguity about what is included.

3

Onboarding and cloud setup

If your records need migrating to Xero or QuickBooks Online, that is handled as part of setup. Access to HMRC’s Making Tax Digital gateway is configured. You do very little — the transition is managed from this end.

4

Quarterly returns, handled

Each quarter, your VAT return is prepared from current records, reviewed, and submitted before the deadline. You receive confirmation, a summary of what was filed, and an early indication of the following quarter’s liability. The VAT side of your business runs quietly in the background, as it should.

Questions

What people usually ask before getting started

Do you handle VAT for businesses with mixed supplies — some standard-rated, some zero-rated or exempt?+

Yes. Mixed-supply situations — common in food businesses, healthcare, property, and construction — require careful coding at the bookkeeping stage so the return reflects the correct output and input tax. Partial exemption calculations, where a business has both exempt and taxable income, are assessed each quarter and apportioned in line with HMRC’s standard and special methods. This is not unusual work, and it is something we deal with regularly across several sectors.

What does VAT return handling cost, and what exactly is included?+

Pricing is fixed and agreed before the first return. It is based on your transaction volume, which VAT scheme you are on, and whether bookkeeping is included or handled separately. The quote covers quarterly preparation, submission via MTD-compatible software, and a post-filing summary. There are no variable charges for a busy quarter. A free quote is available through the form on this page.

My VAT records are behind. Can you still take this on?+

Catch-up work is straightforward to scope once we understand how far back the records go and what raw data is available. Catch-up is priced separately from the ongoing quarterly fee and quoted transparently before any work starts. Once the records are current, the ongoing arrangement operates as normal. Most clients with a backlog are up to date within four to six weeks.

Is there a long-term contract or minimum commitment?+

There is no long-term contract. The arrangement runs monthly, and either party can end it with reasonable notice. If you leave, your records are handed over in an orderly state and your agent authorisation with HMRC is removed promptly. You will not be left chasing for data.

Can you handle the Construction Industry Scheme reverse charge for VAT?+

Yes. The domestic reverse charge for construction services has been in effect since March 2021 and applies to most VAT-registered subcontractors supplying construction services to other VAT-registered contractors. Getting the distinction between end-users, intermediary suppliers, and specified services right matters — a misapplied reverse charge creates problems at the point of HMRC review. This is part of the standard work we do for construction and trades clients in Hampshire.

Can you advise on which VAT scheme gives the best outcome for my business?+

The flat rate, annual accounting, and cash accounting schemes each suit different business profiles, and the right answer depends on your turnover, sector, and the proportion of VAT you reclaim on purchases. This is reviewed as part of onboarding and revisited if your business changes materially. The flat rate scheme, in particular, can either save money or cost it depending on the sector percentage — it is not a default recommendation.
