Sound familiar?

CIS admin pulling you off the tools?

The Construction Industry Scheme was designed to tackle tax evasion in construction, which is reasonable in theory. In practice, it creates a monthly compliance burden that most contractors and subcontractors did not sign up for when they started a trade. Monthly returns, subcontractor verification, deduction rate errors and year-end reclaims all add up quickly, and the penalties for getting them wrong are immediate.

  • Monthly CIS returns missed or filed late, triggering automatic HMRC penalties
  • Subcontractors paid at the wrong deduction rate because verification was skipped
  • CIS deductions suffered all year but never reclaimed through the Self Assessment or payroll offset

What a clean CIS setup looks like

When the CIS cycle is handled properly, the monthly admin takes minutes rather than hours and the year-end reclaim process is straightforward. Your deduction records are current, your subcontractors are verified correctly, and penalties are not a concern.

  • Monthly CIS returns prepared and filed before the 19th, every month without exception
  • Every subcontractor verified with HMRC before payment, correct rate applied every time
  • CIS deductions tracked throughout the year and reclaimed in full at year-end
  • Fixed monthly fee so the cost of staying compliant is predictable and clear

What you get

Everything in the CIS compliance cycle

A complete CIS service covering monthly returns, subcontractor verification, payroll deduction administration, and year-end reclaims. All included for a single fixed monthly fee.

01

Monthly CIS Returns to HMRC

Your monthly return is prepared and submitted before the 19th of the following month, every month. All deductions made to subcontractors are reported accurately, and you receive confirmation once it is filed. No deadline anxiety, no last-minute scrambles.

Included as standard
02

Subcontractor Verification and Deduction Management

Before paying any subcontractor, they must be verified with HMRC to establish the correct deduction rate. Applying the wrong rate creates liability for the contractor. We handle verification for each new subcontractor and maintain deduction records month by month.

Included as standard
03

CIS Refund Claims and Year-End Reconciliation

Subcontractors who have had CIS deductions made from their payments throughout the year are entitled to reclaim those deductions against their tax liability. We reconcile the full year’s deduction statements and claim back what is owed, whether through Self Assessment or the payroll offset for limited companies.

Why Supreme Consulting

What makes the difference for construction clients

CIS is a scheme with narrow margins for error and automatic penalties for late filing. The accountant you use needs to understand how it works in practice, not just in theory.

🏗️

CIS handled every month without prompting

The 19th monthly deadline does not move, and HMRC does not issue reminders. Supreme Consulting runs the CIS return cycle proactively for every client, so your return is filed on time whether or not you have had a chance to think about it. No chasing, no missed deadlines.

💷

Fixed pricing, no surprise bills

CIS work is scoped and priced upfront. You know what the monthly fee covers before you sign anything. There are no hourly rates to second-guess and no additional charges when the return takes slightly longer than expected.

📅

Twenty years of practical experience

Supreme Consulting has been serving small businesses and contractors since 2005. Stuart Green works directly with construction and trade clients, so you are not being handed to a junior who has to look things up. The advice you get is grounded in two decades of hands-on accounting practice.

Getting started

Up and running in four straightforward steps

Switching accountants or setting up CIS for the first time is easier than most contractors expect. The process takes a short call and a small amount of paperwork.

1

A brief discovery call

We start with a no-obligation conversation about your business, how you currently operate under CIS, and what you need from an accountant. You will leave the call knowing exactly what happens next and what it costs.

2

A clear, fixed-fee proposal

You receive a written proposal covering the scope of the service, the monthly fee, and what is included. No ambiguity, no hourly rates, no scope creep to worry about later.

3

Onboarding and records setup

We handle the transition. If you are switching from another accountant, we request the relevant records and take care of the HMRC agent authorisation. Your CIS deduction history is reconciled and the compliance calendar is set up from day one.

4

CIS compliance running quietly in the background

Once the setup is done, your monthly CIS return is filed automatically and your deduction records are maintained throughout the year. The year-end reclaim is handled without you having to remember it. The construction work stays front and centre; the accounting runs behind it.

Questions

Common questions about CIS accounting

Do you handle both the contractor and subcontractor sides of CIS?+

Yes. If you are a contractor, we handle your monthly CIS return, subcontractor verification, and deduction administration. If you are a subcontractor, we track the deductions made from your payments throughout the year and reclaim them at year-end through your Self Assessment return or, if you operate as a limited company, via the payroll offset. The two positions have different obligations and different reclaim routes, and we work with clients on both sides of the arrangement.

What does CIS accounting actually cost?+

Pricing is fixed and scoped to your situation. The monthly fee depends on how many subcontractors you pay, whether you also need payroll or bookkeeping, and the complexity of your year-end position. You will receive a written quote before committing to anything. There are no hourly rates and no additional charges for a return that takes longer than expected.

My CIS records are a mess — can you still help?+

Yes. Contractors and subcontractors often come to us with incomplete deduction statements, unverified subcontractors on the books, or months of unfiled returns. We carry out a catch-up exercise to bring your records current, reconcile what has been deducted and what has been filed, and work out whether any penalties have accrued. The catch-up is scoped and priced separately from the ongoing monthly service so you know what it will cost upfront.

Am I locked in to a long-term contract?+

No. There is no minimum term. If you decide to leave, you give one month’s notice and we transfer your records and deduction statements in good order. The only sensible time to switch mid-year is after a CIS return deadline, which we will advise on, but there is no contractual barrier to leaving whenever you choose.

What happens if I pay a subcontractor at the wrong deduction rate?+

If you apply the wrong CIS deduction rate — for example, deducting 20% when a subcontractor should have been on gross payment status, or failing to verify and defaulting to 30% — the liability sits with the contractor. We verify each subcontractor before payment is made and keep deduction records current, so the rate applied is always the rate HMRC has confirmed. If an error has already occurred, we can help quantify the exposure and correct it before it compounds.

Can a limited company subcontractor offset CIS deductions against PAYE?+

Yes. A limited company that has suffered CIS deductions from contractor payments can offset those deductions against its PAYE and National Insurance liabilities each month, rather than waiting for the year-end corporation tax return. This improves cash flow considerably for companies with a payroll. We set up and administer the offset as part of the CIS service so you are not waiting twelve months to see money that is already owed to you.
