Sound familiar?
Not sure if your books are actually MTD-compatible?
Making Tax Digital has been rolling out in stages, and the rules are not always straightforward. A lot of businesses assume their spreadsheet or legacy software is compliant when it is not. Others have been VAT-registered for years without ever properly migrating to an HMRC-recognised digital route. The quarterly submission deadline arrives, something is wrong, and the scramble begins.
- ✕ Records kept in spreadsheets that are not linked to any MTD-approved submission route
- ✕ Quarterly VAT deadlines approached without confidence that figures are accurate or compliant
- ✕ No clear picture of whether your business is meeting its MTD obligations now, let alone when MTD ITSA arrives
What compliant looks like
MTD compliance is largely a bookkeeping and software question, and it is one we handle every day. Once your records are on a compatible platform and your submission route is set up correctly, quarterly filing becomes a routine rather than a scramble.
- ✓ Cloud bookkeeping on Xero or QuickBooks, connected directly to HMRC’s MTD portal
- ✓ Quarterly VAT figures reviewed and submitted accurately, ahead of each deadline
- ✓ A clear assessment of your MTD position now, with a plan in place for MTD for Income Tax when it applies to you
- ✓ Fixed-fee pricing with no unexpected charges when deadlines arrive

Everything covered under one fixed fee
MTD compliance is not one task, it is a chain of connected ones. Here is what the service covers, clearly and without hidden extras.
MTD-Compatible Cloud Bookkeeping
Your records are maintained in Xero or QuickBooks Online, both of which are HMRC-recognised for MTD submissions. Monthly bookkeeping keeps the figures current so nothing needs to be reconstructed at the quarter end. You have real-time access to your accounts at any point.
Included as standardQuarterly VAT Submissions via MTD
Each quarter, VAT figures are reviewed for accuracy, and the return is submitted directly to HMRC through the digital link required under MTD rules. If there is anything to query before submission, you will hear about it before the deadline, not after. The annual accounting scheme and voluntary registration are also handled where applicable.
Every quarter, on timeMTD ITSA Readiness and Planning
MTD for Income Tax Self Assessment is being introduced in phases, starting with sole traders and landlords earning above the threshold. We assess where you stand, ensure your record-keeping is set up correctly ahead of your mandation date, and handle the quarterly reporting once it applies. No last-minute migration required.

Hand-Holding Advice for Small Business Owners
“I’m so grateful for the help received with my small cleaning business. Stuart holds your hand and advises throughout!”
Why small businesses switch their MTD compliance to us
There are plenty of accountants who will file your VAT return. Fewer who will make sure the whole digital chain is set up correctly and stays that way.
Xero and QuickBooks, properly set up
Being certified in both Xero and QuickBooks Online means the software is configured correctly for MTD from the outset, not bodged into compliance. The bridging software workarounds and manual export routines that many businesses rely on are removed. Your digital link to HMRC is clean and audit-ready.
Over 20 years handling compliance
Supreme Consulting has been working with small businesses and sole traders since 2005, through multiple rounds of HMRC digitalisation. MTD for VAT is not a new challenge here, and the preparation work for MTD for Income Tax is already underway for clients who will be affected. Experience means fewer surprises at the deadline.
Fixed fee, no deadline surcharges
MTD submissions happen quarterly, and the price does not change when the deadline arrives. Fixed-fee pricing means you know what compliance costs before the quarter starts, and there are no additional charges for submission, review, or HMRC correspondence. What is agreed upfront is what you pay.
Up and running in four steps
The transition to MTD-compliant bookkeeping is straightforward once someone who knows the process is managing it. Here is what that looks like.
A conversation about your setup
A no-obligation call to understand your current bookkeeping method, whether you are already VAT-registered, and where your MTD obligations sit right now. No preparation needed on your part.
A clear, fixed-fee proposal
You receive a written proposal covering exactly what is included, the monthly fee, and the timeline for getting everything in order. No open-ended hourly rates, no scope that grows unexplained.
Migration and MTD setup
If your records need to move to Xero or QuickBooks, that migration is handled. The digital link to HMRC is established, any catch-up bookkeeping is completed, and you are registered for MTD if that has not already happened.
Quarterly compliance, handled
Each quarter, your VAT figures are reviewed and submitted without you having to prompt anyone or chase a deadline. You receive confirmation once it is done. The part of running a business that felt like the most avoidable kind of admin is, largely, off your plate.
“Stuart is a thorough efficient worker who produces good quality results at a reasonable price.”
Common questions about MTD compliance
Does MTD for VAT apply to my business, and what exactly does it require?
MTD for VAT has been mandatory for all VAT-registered businesses since November 2022, regardless of turnover. It requires digital record-keeping and submission of VAT returns via HMRC-approved software with a digital link between your records and the submission. If you are currently using a spreadsheet without a bridging tool, or filing manually through your HMRC account, you are likely not fully compliant. We assess your current setup and close any gaps.
What does MTD compliance cost, and what is included?
Pricing is fixed and agreed upfront based on your VAT registration status, the volume of transactions, and whether catch-up bookkeeping is needed at the outset. The fee covers monthly bookkeeping in Xero or QuickBooks, quarterly VAT preparation and submission, and any routine HMRC correspondence relating to MTD. There are no additional charges for filing or for the quarterly deadline itself. We provide a written quote before anything starts.
My books are in a bit of a state. Can you still take this on?
Yes, and it is not an unusual starting point. Most clients arrive with records that need some degree of catch-up or clean-up before MTD submissions can be made accurately. That work is scoped and priced separately from the ongoing monthly service, so you know exactly what the one-off cost is before committing. Once the catch-up is done, the ongoing compliance is straightforward.
Is there a long-term contract?
No. Pricing is on a monthly basis and there is no minimum term beyond the initial onboarding period. If the arrangement does not suit you, you leave with clean, MTD-compliant records and no outstanding obligations. In practice, most clients stay because the compliance is handled and there is nothing to prompt them to leave.
What is MTD for Income Tax, and when does it affect me?
MTD for Income Tax Self Assessment requires sole traders and landlords with qualifying income above £50,000 to submit quarterly updates to HMRC digitally, replacing the annual Self Assessment return over time. The threshold drops in subsequent years. If you are a sole trader or landlord approaching or above the threshold, the time to get your records onto a compatible platform is before mandation, not after. We can confirm your specific start date and get the setup in place well in advance.
Can MTD compliance be combined with my Self Assessment or year-end accounts?
Yes, and it usually makes sense to do so. If we are already maintaining your digital records for MTD purposes, the data needed for your Self Assessment return or year-end accounts is already current and accurate. Combining services avoids duplication, keeps costs lower overall, and means your tax position is visible throughout the year rather than only at filing time.
