Takes the Time to Explain Things

“They take the time to explain things.”

Dorset Bin Cleaning

Sound familiar?

Still not sure what your tax bill will be?

Most sole traders know their trade. The accounts side tends to drift — receipts in a drawer, a Self Assessment return rushed in January, expenses claimed without confidence. It is not a crisis, but it costs more than it should, and it takes more of your time than it ought to.

  • ✕ Self Assessment rushed every January, never quite sure of the figure
  • ✕ Expenses claimed roughly, with no confidence you are getting them right
  • ✕ No idea whether you are close to the VAT threshold or safely clear of it

What sorted looks like

Your accounts are prepared throughout the year, not assembled in a panic. You know your tax position well ahead of the deadline. The deductions are right, the records are clean, and there is nothing sitting in a drawer getting worse.

  • ✓ Tax return filed on time, with your liability confirmed months in advance
  • ✓ Allowable expenses reviewed annually so nothing claimable gets missed
  • ✓ VAT registration position monitored, flagged before it becomes an obligation
  • ✓ Fixed-fee pricing agreed upfront — no surprises on the bill

What you get

What your sole trader package covers

Core compliance handled as standard. Optional add-ons for bookkeeping, VAT, and quarterly reviews are scoped and priced clearly before any work begins.

01

Self Assessment, Done Properly

Your SA100 is prepared from your records, with all allowable expenses reviewed and claimed correctly. You receive a clear summary of the liability before filing, so there are no surprises in January. We also handle HMRC correspondence if anything comes back.

Included as standard
02

Bookkeeping and Cloud Records

Monthly bookkeeping using Xero or QuickBooks Online means your accounts are current rather than reconstructed at year end. Bank feeds, invoices, and receipts are matched and categorised, giving you a clear picture of income and outgoings at any point in the year.

Available as add-on
03

VAT and MTD Compliance

If you are VAT-registered, quarterly returns are filed on time and in line with Making Tax Digital requirements. If you are approaching the threshold, we flag it before it becomes a problem and handle registration when the time comes.

Available as add-on

Why Supreme Consulting

Why sole traders work with us over anyone else

There is no shortage of accountants. The difference tends to show up in how quickly they respond, how clearly they explain things, and whether they actually know your situation before you have to explain it.

📅

Over 20 Years With Small Businesses

Founded in 2005, Supreme Consulting has spent two decades working with sole traders, freelancers, and owner-managed businesses across Hampshire. The situations that feel complicated to you are ones we have seen and dealt with many times before. That background shapes every piece of advice you receive.

💷

Fixed Fees, Agreed Before We Start

Your quote covers the scope of work clearly — year-end accounts, Self Assessment, and any add-ons — priced as a fixed fee with no hourly overage. You know what you are paying from the first conversation, and the price does not move unless the work does.

💬

Questions Answered Within One Working Day

If you have a query about an invoice, an expense you are unsure about, or a letter from HMRC, you will have a reply within one working day. Most sole traders find that prompt access to someone who actually knows their file is the part they value most.

Getting started

Up and running in four straightforward steps

The process is designed to be low-effort on your side. Most clients are fully set up within a week of the initial call.

1

A Short Discovery Call

We start with a no-obligation conversation — usually 20 to 30 minutes — to understand your business, your current records, and what you actually need from an accountant. No preparation required on your part.

2

A Clear, Fixed-Fee Proposal

You receive a written proposal covering exactly what is included, the price, and the timeline. Nothing open-ended, nothing vague. You decide at your own pace whether to proceed.

3

We Handle the Transition

If you are switching from another accountant or starting fresh, we manage the process. Records are migrated to the cloud, your previous accountant is contacted where needed, and we take care of any outstanding compliance.

4

Your Accounts Running Properly

From here, your books are maintained, your returns filed on time, and your tax position kept visible throughout the year. You focus on the work; the compliance side runs as it should, and nothing sits unattended.

Questions

Things sole traders usually ask us first

Do you only handle the tax return, or do you look at what I can actually claim?+

The tax return is the output; reviewing your allowable expenses is part of preparing it properly. We go through your income and outgoings to make sure legitimate expenses — use of home, vehicle costs, equipment, professional subscriptions — are claimed where the rules allow. We do not guess, and we do not just accept whatever you have tracked yourself without checking it.

What does sole trader accounting actually cost with you?+

Pricing depends on the complexity of your business and what you need. A straightforward Self Assessment with basic bookkeeping review sits at one price point; adding quarterly bookkeeping, VAT returns, or regular catch-up work adds to that figure. You receive a written fixed-fee quote before anything starts, so there is no ambiguity about what you are paying for.

My records are a bit of a mess. Can you still help?+

Yes, and it is not unusual. We handle catch-up and clean-up bookkeeping as a separate piece of work, priced based on how far back the records go and the volume involved. Once the backlog is cleared, we put a structure in place so it does not drift again. The catch-up cost is quoted upfront.

Is there a minimum contract or notice period?+

There is no long-term contract. We work on a rolling monthly basis for ongoing services. If you want to leave, you give us reasonable notice, your records and files are returned to you in order, and nothing is owed beyond work completed to that point. We prefer clients to stay because it is working, not because leaving is inconvenient.

I am approaching the VAT threshold. Do I need to do anything now?+

If your taxable turnover is approaching £90,000 over any rolling 12-month period, registration becomes mandatory. We monitor that position as part of ongoing work and flag it before you cross the line, not after. We also handle voluntary registration if it makes commercial sense to register earlier, and we manage the MTD-compatible VAT return process from the point of registration.

How far in advance will I know what tax I owe?+

With records maintained throughout the year, we can usually give you a clear liability figure two to four months before the 31 January deadline. That gives you time to set aside the amount or make a payment on account adjustment without any cash flow shock. You will not be finding out your tax bill in late January for the first time.

Ready when you are

Your accounts in order, your tax bill known.

A short call is all it takes to get started. You will leave it knowing exactly what is included, what it costs, and what happens next — which is more than most sole traders know going in.
