Sound familiar?

Growing fast, but flying blind on the numbers?

Many owner-managed businesses in New Milton reach a point where the books are handled, the VAT is filed, and yet no one is actually watching the financial direction of the business. Decisions get made on feel. Cash shortfalls arrive without much warning. The margin picture only becomes clear at year end, which is rather too late to act on it.

  • No forward view of cash — surprises show up in the bank account
  • Pricing and margin decisions made without reliable cost data to support them
  • No senior finance input at board level, but too early to justify a full-time FD

What a part-time FD actually changes

A fractional Finance Director sits alongside you on a retained basis, giving you the financial oversight that growing businesses need without the overhead of a full-time hire. The numbers stop being a retrospective record and start being a tool you actually use.

  • Rolling cash flow forecasts so you see pressure points weeks in advance
  • Margin and pricing analysis grounded in your actual cost base
  • Regular strategic input at the level your business needs right now
  • All delivered on a fixed monthly retainer with no surprise invoices

What you get

What the part-time FD retainer covers

The service is built around three areas that make a measurable difference to how a growing business is run. Everything is scoped clearly before work begins.

01

Management Accounts and Reporting

Monthly or quarterly management accounts prepared to a consistent format, giving you a clear picture of performance against budget. Dashboards are available where useful, so the numbers are readable at a glance rather than buried in a spreadsheet.

Included as standard
02

Cash Flow Forecasting and Modelling

A rolling cash flow model maintained on your behalf, updated as actuals come in. Scenario modelling is available for decisions that carry financial risk, so you go into those conversations with numbers rather than estimates.

Ongoing, monthly
03

Strategic and Commercial Advice

Access to senior financial thinking when you need it, whether that is a pricing review, a growth plan, a funding conversation, or preparation for a business exit. The advice is grounded in your actual numbers, not generic frameworks.

Why Supreme Consulting

Why growing businesses choose us for FD support

There are several reasons why a part-time FD arrangement works better with some firms than others. These are the ones that tend to matter most to our clients.

📅

Over 20 years of commercial experience

Stuart Green founded Supreme Consulting in 2005 and has worked directly with owner-managed businesses across accounting, cash flow, business planning, and performance monitoring for over two decades. The advice comes from someone who has seen most situations before, which tends to shorten the time between identifying a problem and resolving it.

💡

Commercial insight, not accounting theory

Part-time FD support is only useful if the person providing it understands how businesses actually work, not just how accounts are prepared. Every piece of guidance is grounded in your trading reality: your margins, your payment terms, your cost base. The goal is always better decisions, not more paperwork.

💷

Fixed monthly retainer, clear scope

The retainer is agreed upfront with a clear scope of what is included. There are no hourly billing surprises at the end of the month. If you need something outside the agreed scope, that is discussed and priced before the work begins, which is how it should be.

Getting started

Up and running in four straightforward steps

Most clients are fully onboarded within two to three weeks. The process is designed to require as little effort from you as possible.

1

A conversation about your business

We start with a no-obligation call to understand where your business is now, what decisions you are trying to make, and what financial information you currently have access to. There is nothing to prepare in advance.

2

A clear, fixed proposal

You receive a written proposal setting out the scope of the FD service, what is included each month, and the fixed monthly fee. No vague commitments and no opaque day rates.

3

Onboarding and setup

We connect to your accounting software, review your existing management information, and establish the reporting and forecasting structure. You do not need to provide anything beyond access to your records.

4

Ongoing financial oversight

From the first month, you have a senior finance contact reviewing your numbers, flagging what matters, and available to discuss decisions before you make them. The kind of financial oversight that used to require a full-time hire, on a retainer that fits a growing business.

Questions

Things people usually ask before getting started

What does a part-time FD actually do that my existing accountant does not?+

Most accountants handle compliance: accounts, tax returns, VAT. A part-time FD operates at a different level, focusing on the financial direction of the business rather than its historic record. That means cash flow forecasting, margin analysis, strategic input on decisions, and a finance contact who is actively watching how the business is performing month to month, not just at year end.

How is the service priced, and what is included in the monthly retainer?+

The retainer is fixed monthly pricing, agreed in advance based on the scope of work. A typical arrangement covers monthly management accounts, a rolling cash flow forecast, and a monthly review call. Additional work outside the agreed scope is discussed and quoted separately before it begins. There are no hourly rates and no end-of-month billing surprises.

Our management information is currently a mess. Is that a problem?+

It is a common starting point. The onboarding process includes a review of your existing records and accounting setup, and where necessary we will work with you to bring the information up to a standard that is actually useful. The first month is often partly about establishing the baseline before the forward-looking work begins.

Is there a minimum contract period or long-term commitment required?+

There is no long-term lock-in. The arrangement works on a rolling monthly basis with a reasonable notice period on either side. If it becomes clear after a few months that the service is not delivering what you need, you are not tied in. Your records will be in order and handed over cleanly.

How much of my time does this require each month?+

The monthly review call typically runs 30 to 60 minutes. Outside of that, the main requirement is access to your accounting software and a prompt response to any queries we raise. Most clients find the time commitment is considerably less than managing the finance function themselves, which is rather the point.

Can the part-time FD service help with a specific decision, such as taking on a new hire or opening a second site?+

Yes. One of the more practical uses of the service is financial modelling around a specific decision before it is made. If you are considering a significant investment or a change to your cost base, we can model the impact on cash flow and margins so you are making the decision with numbers rather than assumptions.
