Sound familiar?
Still not sure what your tax bill will be this year?
Running a business as a sole trader in Hampshire means your accounts and tax obligations sit alongside everything else you are trying to do. The Self Assessment deadline arrives, the records are not quite where they should be, and the number HMRC expects comes as more of a surprise than it ought to. It is a common situation, and it is largely avoidable.
- ✕ Self Assessment filed in a rush the week before the deadline
- ✕ No clear picture of allowable expenses, leaving money on the table
- ✕ Books out of date and no real sense of profit until year-end
What sorted looks like
A sole trader with an accountant who stays on top of it year-round pays the right amount of tax, claims what they are entitled to, and is never caught off guard by a deadline. That is the straightforward version of what this service delivers.
- ✓ Self Assessment prepared and filed with months to spare
- ✓ All allowable expenses reviewed so your tax liability is as low as it should be
- ✓ Books kept current all year so your profit position is always visible
- ✓ Fixed-fee pricing agreed upfront with no unexpected invoices
What sole traders say about working with us
Small business owners across Hampshire come to us with books in varying states. Most leave considerably less worried about their finances than when they arrived.

Everything a sole trader needs, clearly priced
Sole trader accounting covers more ground than just the tax return. These are the three areas that make the most practical difference to owner-managed businesses in Hampshire.
Self Assessment and Personal Tax
Your SA100 is prepared accurately, submitted on time, and reviewed for every expense you are entitled to claim. You will know your tax liability well in advance of the January deadline, with enough notice to plan for it. Directors drawing income from a sole trade and individuals with rental or investment income are covered within the same return.
Included as standardBookkeeping and Cloud Accounting
Monthly bookkeeping using Xero or QuickBooks Online keeps your records current and your profit position visible throughout the year. If your books are behind, a catch-up service is available to bring everything up to date before we begin. Real-time access means you always know where you stand, without waiting until year-end to find out.
Available as add-onVAT Returns and MTD Compliance
If your turnover is above the VAT threshold, or you have voluntarily registered, quarterly VAT returns are filed on time and Making Tax Digital requirements are met without you having to think about them. Advice on the right VAT scheme for your business is included, whether that is the flat rate, cash accounting, or standard method.
Available as add-onHeard consistently across our client base
Sole traders, small business owners, and contractors across Hampshire describe broadly the same experience: clear communication, practical advice, and no unpleasant surprises.

What makes the difference for sole traders
There is no shortage of accountants in Hampshire. These are the reasons sole traders who have been with us for several years have stayed.
Over 20 years working with small businesses
Supreme Consulting has been operating from Lymington since 2005, and Stuart has worked directly with sole traders, freelancers, and owner-managed businesses throughout. That means you will not spend the first three conversations explaining how your trade works. The context is already there.
Fixed fees, agreed before we start
Every quote is scope-based and agreed upfront. There are no hourly rates running in the background and no invoice arriving because you sent a few extra emails. You know the annual cost before you sign, which makes it considerably easier to budget.
Advice that goes beyond the tax return
Filing your Self Assessment accurately is the minimum requirement, not the full service. Throughout the year you have access to practical guidance on allowable expenses, VAT registration thresholds, cash flow, and what incorporating as a limited company would actually mean for your tax position. Plain-English answers, on the day you ask.
Up and running in four straightforward steps
Most clients are fully set up within a week or two. The transition is handled on our side and requires very little from you beyond a brief conversation at the start.
A brief discovery call
We start with a no-obligation conversation to understand your business, how your records are currently kept, and what you need from your accountant. It takes around twenty minutes and you will leave knowing exactly what the service would look like for you.
A clear, fixed-fee proposal
You receive a written proposal covering the scope of services, what is included, and a fixed annual or monthly fee. No vague estimates. If the scope changes later, we discuss it before anything changes on the invoice.
Onboarding and cloud setup
We handle the transition to cloud accounting, migrate existing records, and connect any integrations your business needs. If you are switching from another accountant, we deal with the professional clearance process. You do very little at this stage beyond providing access.
Your books handled, year-round
From here, your accounts run in the background without requiring your attention. Deadlines are tracked, returns are filed, and you hear from us proactively when something needs your input. Your tax bill arrives as a known figure, not a surprise — which is, frankly, how it should have been all along.
“Stuart is a thorough efficient worker who produces good quality results at a reasonable price.”
Things sole traders usually ask us
Do you understand the expenses specific to my trade — tools, mileage, home office, subcontractors?
Yes. Allowable expense rules for sole traders vary meaningfully depending on trade — a plumber, a consultant, and a childminder each have a different set of legitimate claims. We review your income and expenditure against the applicable HMRC guidance and make sure nothing claimable is left out. You will not need to brief us on the basics of your industry before getting a useful answer.
What does it cost, and what is actually included?
Sole trader pricing is fixed and agreed in advance based on the scope of services you need. A Self Assessment return with a bookkeeping review starts at a set annual fee; if you want quarterly bookkeeping, VAT returns, or payroll added, those are costed separately and clearly. You will receive a written proposal before anything starts, so there are no ambiguities about what is covered.
My books are a bit behind. Is that a problem?
It is a common situation and not a reason to delay getting help. We offer a catch-up bookkeeping service to bring records up to date before the ongoing service begins. The cost of catch-up work is quoted separately so you know what you are committing to. Most clients find that once the backlog is cleared, the ongoing maintenance requires far less time than they expected.
Is there a minimum contract period?
There is no long-term lock-in. We work on a rolling monthly basis for ongoing services, and annual compliance work is billed on completion. If the relationship is not working, you leave with your records in order, your logins transferred, and nothing owed beyond the work completed. We would rather earn your continued business than hold it by contract.
What happens if I am approaching the VAT registration threshold?
Your turnover is monitored as part of the bookkeeping service, and you will hear from us before you cross the threshold rather than after. We will explain the options — compulsory registration, voluntary registration, and the implications of each VAT scheme — with enough time for you to make a considered decision. HMRC penalties for late registration are avoidable when the numbers are being watched.
At what point would it make sense to incorporate as a limited company instead?
It depends on your profit level, personal tax position, and how you want to structure income over time. Generally the tax and National Insurance savings of operating through a limited company become more meaningful above a certain profit threshold, but incorporation also brings additional compliance obligations and costs. We can model both scenarios side by side so the decision is based on actual numbers rather than a general rule of thumb.
