Sound familiar?
Still doing your own accounts because it seemed simpler?
Most sole traders start out managing the numbers themselves. For a while, it works. Then the business grows, the records get behind, and a Self Assessment deadline arrives before everything is reconciled. The tax calculation looks wrong but you are not sure why. The expenses you have claimed might be too conservative, or they might not hold up. It is a lot to carry on top of running the actual business.
- Self Assessment filed in a rush with uncertain figures and missed deductions
- No clear picture of what this year’s tax bill will actually be
- Bookkeeping months behind and growing harder to catch up
What a clean set of books looks like
Your accounts prepared accurately by someone who has done this for over two decades. Your tax position visible well before any deadline. And the kind of plain-English explanation that means you understand exactly where you stand.
- Self Assessment prepared carefully, filed on time, with every allowable deduction reviewed
- Tax bill calculated and communicated months before it falls due
- Bookkeeping brought current and maintained monthly on cloud software
- Fixed-fee quote upfront, so you know the cost before committing to anything
What sole traders say after switching
Clients typically arrive with books in some state of disarray. Most leave with considerably less to worry about and a clearer picture of their tax position.
I’m so grateful for the help received with my small cleaning business. Stuart holds your hand and advises throughout.
Very clear and gives excellent clarity on all situations when I am in doubt. Communication is always prompt, professional, and easy to understand, which makes dealing with finances far less stressful. They take the time to explain things.
Everything a sole trader’s accounts require
Core compliance handled as standard, with bookkeeping, VAT, and advisory available as add-ons depending on what your business actually needs.
Self Assessment and Personal Tax
Your SA100 return prepared, reviewed, and filed with HMRC well ahead of the January deadline. Every allowable expense is considered — business mileage, home working, equipment, professional subscriptions — so the return reflects the full picture. You receive a clear summary of what you owe and when, with no last-minute surprises.
Included as standardBookkeeping and Cloud Accounting
Monthly bookkeeping on Xero or QuickBooks Online keeps your records current and accessible. Income and expenses are categorised correctly, bank reconciliation is done, and you can log in at any point to see where you stand. Year-end preparation becomes straightforward when the books are maintained properly throughout the year.
Available as add-onVAT Returns and MTD Compliance
If you are VAT-registered or approaching the threshold, quarterly returns are prepared and submitted under Making Tax Digital. Your turnover is monitored so you are not caught out by an unexpected registration obligation. Registration support and scheme advice — flat rate, cash accounting, annual accounting — are included in the conversation.
Available as add-onConsistently straightforward, across every client
Sole traders, small business owners, and freelancers across Hampshire and beyond. The feedback is consistent: clear communication, practical advice, fair pricing.

What sets this firm apart from the average high-street accountant
Not the cheapest option. Not the most corporate. Just experienced, straightforward, and genuinely useful.
Twenty-one years of practical experience
Supreme Consulting has been working with sole traders and small businesses since 2005. That means Stuart has seen most situations before — from messy catch-up jobs to HMRC enquiries to businesses approaching the VAT threshold unexpectedly. The advice you receive is grounded in what actually happens, not what the textbook says.
Fixed fees, agreed in advance
The price is quoted before any work begins. No hourly rates accumulating in the background, no invoice that looks different from what you expected. Sole trader packages cover Self Assessment as standard, with add-ons for bookkeeping and VAT priced separately and clearly. You know the cost before you commit.
Cloud books you can actually use
Xero and QuickBooks Online give you a live view of your finances any time you want it, without waiting for a quarterly call. Setup and migration are handled as part of onboarding. Questions get answered within one working day, so you are never left waiting on a reply when a decision needs to be made.
Up and running in four straightforward steps
The process is designed to require as little from you as possible. Most clients are set up and handed over within a couple of weeks.
A no-obligation discovery call
A short conversation to understand your business, your current setup, and what you need from an accountant. You do not need to prepare anything. Bring your questions and a rough sense of your turnover — that is enough to get started.
A clear, fixed-fee proposal
You receive a written proposal covering exactly what is included, the fixed fee, and when things will be completed. No hidden extras, no vague scope. You decide whether it works for you before anything is agreed.
Onboarding and cloud setup
Records are migrated to Xero or QuickBooks Online, any catch-up bookkeeping is completed, and your previous accountant is notified if applicable. The transition is handled on this side — your job is simply to respond to the odd email.
Ongoing, with less to think about
Your accounts are maintained, your deadlines are met, and your tax position is visible well before anything becomes urgent. Questions get answered the day you ask them. The parts of running a business you like least are handled — which is, frankly, the way it should be.
“Stuart is a thorough efficient worker who produces good quality results at a reasonable price.”
Things sole traders usually ask before getting started
Do you only handle the Self Assessment, or is ongoing bookkeeping included?
The core sole trader service covers your annual Self Assessment return and a review of your income and expenses to make sure the figures are accurate. Ongoing monthly bookkeeping is available as an add-on and is priced separately when you receive your proposal. The two work well together, but they are not bundled together by default — you pay for what you actually need.
What does it cost, and what exactly is included?
Pricing is fixed and agreed before any work starts. The exact figure depends on your turnover, whether you are VAT-registered, and how many income sources need to be reported. You will receive a written proposal covering the scope and fee in full. There are no hourly rates running in the background and no bill that looks different from what was quoted.
My books are a bit behind. Is that a problem?
It is a fairly common starting point. Catch-up bookkeeping is included as part of onboarding where needed, and the cost of sorting it out is covered in the initial proposal so there are no surprises. Most clients arrive with records in some state of disarray and leave with everything current and filed correctly. The worse the situation, the more useful it is to have someone else deal with it.
Am I locked into a long-term contract?
There is no lock-in. Services run on a monthly basis and you can give notice at any time. If you decide to leave, your records are handed over in full and your next accountant can pick up from a clean position. The goal is for the service to be useful enough that leaving does not occur to you — but that is your call to make, not a contractual obligation.
I also have some rental income alongside my self-employment. Can you handle both?
Yes. Rental income from residential property, furnished holiday lets, or HMOs is reported on the same Self Assessment return as your self-employment income. The interaction between the two — particularly around allowable expenses, finance cost restrictions, and the property income allowance — is covered as part of the return preparation, not treated as a separate engagement.
How far in advance will I know what my tax bill is going to be?
Once your books are current, a tax estimate can be prepared at any point during the year. Most clients receive a preliminary calculation several months before the January payment deadline, giving enough time to set funds aside or consider whether any year-end planning is worth doing. A January surprise is largely avoidable when the records are up to date.
