Sound familiar?

VAT should be straightforward. Often it is not.

For many small businesses in Christchurch, VAT starts as a quarterly chore and gradually becomes a source of low-grade anxiety. Schemes chosen years ago may no longer suit the business. MTD obligations add a layer of software and process that was never explained properly. And the threshold creeps up without anyone flagging it until it is already a problem.

  • Quarterly returns filed late or prepared in a last-minute rush each time
  • Uncertainty about whether the right VAT scheme is actually being used
  • No clear view of when the registration threshold will be crossed

What handled properly looks like

VAT compliance is manageable when it is set up correctly and reviewed regularly. The right scheme, accurate submissions through MTD-compliant software, and a clear view of your turnover relative to the threshold — these are not complicated, they just need to be done consistently.

  • Returns prepared accurately and submitted on time each quarter, without chasing you
  • Your VAT scheme reviewed to confirm it is still right for how the business is trading
  • Turnover monitored throughout the year so registration obligations are never a surprise
  • Fixed quarterly or monthly fee so the cost is predictable and agreed upfront

What you get

VAT services covered under a fixed fee

From registration through to quarterly filing and MTD compliance, the scope is agreed upfront so there are no unexpected additions to the bill.

01

Quarterly VAT Returns

Your VAT return is prepared from your records each quarter and submitted directly to HMRC through MTD-compliant software. You receive a summary before submission so you know the figures before they go in. No last-minute calls asking for information that should already be to hand.

Included as standard
02

VAT Registration and Scheme Advice

If you are approaching the threshold or recently crossed it, registration is handled from start to finish. For existing VAT-registered businesses, the scheme in use — standard rate, flat rate, cash accounting, annual accounting — is reviewed to confirm it still reflects how the business actually trades.

One-off or ongoing
03

MTD Compliance and Cloud Setup

Making Tax Digital requires digital record-keeping and compatible software for VAT submissions. If your current setup does not meet HMRC requirements, records are migrated to Xero or QuickBooks Online and the submission process is configured correctly. You file compliantly from that point forward without having to think about the mechanics.

Why Supreme Consulting

What makes the difference on VAT

Most accountants will file your VAT return. Fewer will tell you when your scheme is wrong, flag a threshold issue before it becomes a penalty, or set up your software so HMRC gets what it needs without manual workarounds.

📋

No VAT threshold surprises

Turnover is monitored throughout the year against the current registration threshold. If you are approaching it, you will know well in advance — not when the obligation has already crystallised. The same applies on the way down if deregistration becomes relevant.

☁️

MTD submissions handled correctly

Xero and QuickBooks Online are used for all VAT submissions, both of which are fully HMRC-recognised for Making Tax Digital. Records are kept digitally, the submission trail is auditable, and there is no reliance on spreadsheet workarounds that HMRC has begun to scrutinise.

💷

Fixed fee, agreed before you start

The cost of VAT compliance is confirmed before any work begins, based on your submission frequency and the complexity of your records. There are no variable hourly charges that expand when the quarter gets messy. You know what you are paying before the first return is filed.

Getting started

Up and running in four straightforward steps

Most clients are set up and filing compliantly within a few weeks. The transition is handled with minimal disruption to how you already run the business.

1

A no-obligation discovery call

The first conversation is about your business — how it is structured, how VAT is currently handled, and whether there is anything that needs sorting before the first return. It takes around 20 minutes and you will leave knowing what the process looks like.

2

A clear, fixed-fee proposal

Following the call, a written proposal is issued covering exactly what is included, the fee, and the timeline. There are no ambiguous scope items and no services listed that you have not asked for.

3

Records migrated and software configured

If a move to cloud accounting is needed, that is handled as part of onboarding. VAT periods are confirmed with HMRC, the submission connection is set up, and historical records are reviewed so the first return starts from a clean position.

4

Quarterly returns, handled without chasing you

Each quarter, your return is prepared from your records, reviewed, and submitted on time. You receive a summary before anything goes to HMRC. Questions get answered the same day you ask them, and the next deadline is already in hand before the current one has closed.

Questions

A few things Christchurch businesses usually ask

Can you handle VAT for businesses using unusual schemes — flat rate, cash accounting, annual accounting?+

Yes. The scheme in use is reviewed as part of onboarding to confirm it is appropriate for the business. Flat rate can produce a meaningful cash advantage for some businesses and an equally meaningful disadvantage for others — the decision depends on the cost base and sector, not a general rule. If a switch is warranted, the change is handled with HMRC directly.

What does VAT compliance actually cost, and what is included in the fee?+

Pricing is fixed and agreed before any work begins. The fee covers preparation and submission of quarterly VAT returns, review of your records prior to each submission, and responses to any VAT-related queries that arise between returns. A free quote is provided based on your submission frequency and the current state of your records — there is no obligation to proceed.

My VAT records are a mess and I am behind on submissions. Can you still help?+

Catch-up work is fairly common. The first step is a review of where things stand — how many periods are outstanding, whether any penalties have been issued, and what records exist to work from. A fixed price for the catch-up is agreed before the work starts. Once current, ongoing compliance is handled on the standard quarterly basis.

Is there a minimum contract term or notice period?+

There is no long-term contract. Most clients work on a rolling monthly or quarterly basis, and notice is simply one billing period. If you decide to leave, your records are returned in good order and HMRC authorisations are transferred without delay. There is nothing to gain from making switching difficult.

We sell to customers in the EU and are unsure about post-Brexit VAT obligations. Can you advise?+

Cross-border VAT — including place of supply rules, the One Stop Shop (OSS) scheme, and import VAT on goods — is an area where the rules changed materially after 2020 and continue to catch out businesses that have not updated their processes. This is reviewed as part of onboarding for any business selling goods or services internationally, and specific advice is provided based on what you sell and where your customers are.

Is there anything I can do to reduce the VAT I pay legally?+

VAT is largely a pass-through tax, but there are legitimate planning points — correct treatment of mixed-rate supplies, recovery of input VAT on business expenses, and scheme selection all affect the net position. These are reviewed when a new client joins and revisited if the business model changes. The goal is to ensure you are not paying more than you are required to, which is a straightforward professional obligation rather than an exotic planning exercise.
